Pain during twists#1503

Hi! I’m returning to stretching after a break. When getting into twisting positions, I’m experiencing pain in my hip joints, on the side with the bent knee. I don’t recall feeling this last year. Is this normal? Could I be doing something wrong?

Hey! So its actually pretty normal to feel some discomfort when returning to stretching, especially in the hips if they’ve tightened up during your break. The pain in your hip joint on the bent-knee side could be from tight hip flexors, restricted external rotation, or even some mild joint compression. Make sure you’re easing into the stretch rather than forcing the range of motion too quickly, btw.

Try warming up first with gentle hip mobility drills like leg swings, hip circles, or 90/90 transitions. Also, play around with foot placement—sometimes shifting the bent knee slightly outward or adjusting your torso angle can relieve pressure. If it feels more like a sharp or pinching pain deep in the joint rather than a stretch, back off and focus on gradual mobility work rather than forcing depth.

Try this for a few sessions and let me know how you feel!

Hey! The pain is getting better. I figured that during the twists, I was putting too much pressure on my knee with my elbow, forcing my hip a bit. I’m trying to turn using only my core now; this made the most difference. But it’s gradually getting better. Thanks for the advice! I’ll incorporate mobility into my training.
